My Holiday 2024 Top 10 List

Top 10 Diversity and Inclusion-Inspired Shows for the Holidays

The holidays are just around the corner, and for me, that means cozying up on the couch with a warm cup of tea and diving into some incredible storytelling. As someone who loves exploring themes of diversity, inclusion, and connection, I’ve put together a watchlist that I hope inspires you as much as it excites me. If you have a favourite that’s not on this list, I’d love to hear your recommendations – because who doesn’t need something new and meaningful to watch?

Here’s what’s queued up for my holiday viewing:

First Things First

  • Shrinking (Season 2) – I’m almost finished Season 2, and wow, it’s so well done. The way it dives into mental health, grief, and human connection – with humor and heart – is just masterful. I’ll be wrapping this up before diving into the rest of my list.

My Holiday Watchlist

  1. Somebody Somewhere – A tender, funny, and deeply authentic story about finding belonging and embracing your true self, even in the most unexpected places.

  2. North of North (Premiering January 7th on CBC Gem) – I can’t wait for this one. A fresh and intimate look at northern communities, their stories, and their resilience. Mark your calendars!

  3. Rez Ball – A powerful, sports-centered story that shines a light on Indigenous culture and the strength of community.

  4. Buy Now! The Shopping Conspiracy – This show promises to uncover the tangled web of consumerism. A must-watch for anyone curious about the systems shaping our world.

  5. Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story – A truly moving biographical film about perseverance, grit, and breaking barriers.

  6. Lady Bird – One of my all-time favorites. A beautifully layered coming-of-age story that captures the complexities of identity, family, and dreams.

  7. Extraordinary Attorney Woo – This heartwarming series about a neurodivergent attorney navigating life and law is packed with wit, warmth, and important insights.

  8. Out of My Mind – Based on the book, this one tells the inspiring story of a young girl with cerebral palsy who’s determined to share her voice with the world.

  9. Betty – A bold, vibrant series about young women carving out space in the skateboarding world. It’s raw, real, and endlessly inspiring.

  10. Abbott Elementary – If you haven’t watched this yet, you’re in for a treat. It’s laugh-out-loud funny and so thoughtful in how it shines a light on the challenges (and joys) of the education system.

My Holiday Staples

  • Love Actually – Say what you will, but I love, love. This classic makes my heart so full and reminds me why human connection matters.

  • Good Grief – I added this gem to my rotation last year, and it’s quickly become a favorite. It’s full of heart, humor, and those deeper moments that really make you stop and think.

These shows remind me of why storytelling is so important – the way it connects us, challenges us, and shows us what’s possible. Whether it’s through laughter, tears, or new perspectives, these stories inspire me to keep pushing for a more inclusive world.

What’s on your watchlist this holiday season? Let me know – I’m always looking for something meaningful (or just really fun!) to add to my queue. Happy holidays, and happy watching!
